RCV Vinyl

Table of Contents

RCV, or Rigid Core Vinyl, is a type of high-quality vinyl flooring. This rigid core material combines limestone powder and stabilizers, creating an exceptionally durable, stable flooring product. The stone composite core ensures dimensional stability and resists expansion and contraction.

Wear Layer

The wear layer is the topmost layer of the flooring and plays a crucial role in the longevity of the product. Protecting against scratches, stains, and general wear, this near-invisible layer is usually measured in “mils”, with one mil equivalent to 0.001 inches.

Edge Treatment

Edge treatment is the finishing detail applied to the flooring planks or tiles’ edges. One of the popular treatments is the Micro-Beveled Edge, which features a slight bevel and gives definition to individual planks while ensuring smooth transitions.

Underlayer Material

The underlayer, often referred to as a cushion, is placed beneath the floor. It can be crafted from materials such as sponge rubber, foam, recycled plastic, or crumb rubber. Two of the most common materials are EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) and IXPE (Irradiated Cross-Linked Polyethylene). Each provides different benefits depending on specific project requirements, including factors like density, cushioning, water resistance, flexibility, temperature stability, durability, and chemical resistance.

PropertiesEVAIXPE
CompositionA copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate.A form of polyethylene that undergoes a cross-linking process through irradiation.
DensityGenerally has a lower density compared to IXPE.Features a high-density structure, providing durability and resistance to compression.
Softness & Cushioning Known for its soft and cushioning properties, offering a comfortable underfoot feel.Offers good shock absorption, contributing to a comfortable and supportive surface.
Water ResistanceResistant to water, but may not be as inherently water-resistant as some other materialsInherently water-resistant and does not easily absorb moisture, making it suitable for areas prone to spills or humidity.
FlexibilityHighly flexible, conforming to irregularities in the subfloor.Retains flexibility but may not be as flexible as EVA.
TemperatureRetains flexibility at lower temperatures.Generally stable across a range of temperatures.
DurabilityOffers good durability but may be more prone to compression over time. The cross-linking process enhances dimensional stability, reducing the risk of indentation and improving long-term durability.
Chemical ResistanceMay have moderate chemical resistance.Generally resistant to chemicals, enhancing suitability for various environments.

Installation System

The Unilin click interlocking installation system is a commonly used method for installing various types of flooring, including RCV vinyl flooring. This patented technology offers a secure and efficient way to connect individual flooring planks or tiles without the need for adhesives. Known as the Click and Lock System, the planks or tiles have tongue-and-groove edges that click together during installation, creating a secure, seamless connection.
